Tilburstow Common

tilburstow commonOwned and manged by the Parish Council, Tilburstow Common is a 22 hectare site consisting mostly of mixed woodland situated on the Lower Greensand ridge.

The land rises from the B2236 Eastbourne Road following Enterdent Road up to its junction with Tilburstow Hill Road.

There is public access via a network of footpaths and the area is crossed by a public bridleway.

At the northern end is a small cluster of 19th century cottages known as The Enterdent.

Our Vision & Targets:

A parish council is a democratically elected authority given limited legal powers but with wide responsibilities to manage certain local facilities and services. Parish councillors are elected to represent the best interests of their local residents.

Parish councils need funds to support their activities. These funds are raised by adding a “precept” to each householder’s Council Tax bill via the District Council.

Tandridge District Council has to consult parish councils on all local planning issues, appeals, inquiries and licensing where they affect the parish.

Parish councils get involved in providing, maintaining and protecting areas such as:
  • Allotments
  • Churchyard & cemeteries
  • Open spaces & playing fields
  • Litter control
  • Ponds
  • Seats and shelters

In some cases the parish Council can make recommendations but has no further jurisdiction, for example over public rights of way that Surrey County Council Highways control.

Parish Councils can spend money for any purpose considered to be of overall benefit to the area and its residents.

Godstone Parish Councillors listen to parishioners and work toward building a positive and progressive community for those who live here.

Godstone Green

godstone green

Godstone Green is an area of common land situated in the centre of Godstone Village and was given to Godstone Parish Council by Sir Peter Greenwell in 1950.

The Green comprises a grassed area bordered on all sides by a variety of trees, notably some venerable Horse Chestnuts.

Facilities include a sports pavilion, a football pitch, cricket square, childrens play area, and a boules pitch. In addition tennis and bowling are catered for in an area south of the Green.

The Green is a venue for a number of events such as occasional funfairs and a very popular Village Fete and Donkey Derby held every August Bank Holiday. In 2012 the Green hosted a special event for the Queen's Golden Jubilee and later on large crowds witnessed the Olympic Flame passing through the village.

In earlier times the pond on Godstone Green was used as a horse-pond with a sloping bank down which the wagoners drove their horses. To-day the pond has a brick surround and a central island. Although fed solely by surface drainage, it attracts a variety of bird life and is a much-loved feature. In periods of drought the water can get quite low and unfortunately there is little that can be done about this.

A rope making business used to operate on the Green until the beginning of the 20th Century and until recent times the old Rope Walk could still be seen faintly.

Use of Gazebos on Godstone Green

The council request that gazebo’s are not used on Godstone Green without permission being sought from council. If you wish to request permission you should contact the Clerk giving the details of the date and reason you would like to erect a gazebo and enough notice for the request to be considered at the next council meeting.

Childrens Playground

The children's playground on Godstone Green has a range of equipment suitable for toddlers, infant and junior aged children and is suitable for children up to the age of 10.  Children using the playground should be supervised by an adult at all times.

The council recommends that the playground only be used during daylight hours and there are no telephone or first aid facilities at the playground.

If there is an issue with the playground or an accident occurs please report it to the Parish office; This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or 01883 744 209.

Using the Green

Councillors encourage the use of the Green and it is there for the public to enjoy and for the use of Community Events.

If you are an organisation wanting to use the Green for regular activities or a one off annual event permission is subject to confirmation with the Parish Council and the appropriate Public Liability Insurance cover being confirmed, please contact the Clerk for more details.

Casual Horse and Cycle Riding are not permitted as the Green is common land and this is also to ensure the safety of other green users.

BBQ's are not permitted on Godstone Green.

If you would like to know if an open space charge and community events charge is applicable then please contact the clerk - This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

There is limited light on the boundary of the Green and no telephone or first aid facilities

If an accident occurs on the Green, please report it to the Parish office; This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or 01883 744 209.
